Iran's steel industry needs 54,000 tons of needle coke a year, which will be fully met in the coming years, Executive Director of Iran’s Shazand Oil Refining Company Gholamhossein Ramazanpour said, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

Ramazanpour emphasized that needle coke is a raw material used in the production of graphite electrodes. About 50 million tons of steel products can be produced a year from this volume of coke.

The director added that 94,000 tons of needle coke are planned to be produced in Iran in the coming years.

“By March 2025, a plant will be built at the Shazand Oil Refining Company to produce 90,000 tons of needle coke per year. The plant will fully meet the needs of the steel plant for the production of graphite electrodes in the Ardakan County of Yazd Province. In addition to the production of needle coke, the plant will reduce the company's mazut production to zero,” he noted.

As reported, The Shazand (Imam Khomeini) Oil Refining Company was launched in 1993 with the capacity to process 150,000 barrels of oil per day. The company currently processes more than 250,000 barrels of oil.

It also produces more than 17 million liters of gasoline and 12 million liters of diesel in accordance with the Euro 4 standard as well as 500 tons of propylene, 400 tons of granular sulfur and 2,000 tons of liquefied gas per day.
