A 100 MW photovoltaic station is being launched in the Karmaninsky district of Uzbekistan’s Navoi region, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.
Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is taking part in the ceremony, the press secretary of the head of state Sherzod Asadov reports.
The volume of investments in the plant amounted to $110 million, 300,000 panels were installed. The work took 1.5 years.
The head of state noted that the station will produce 252 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. Thanks to this, 80 million cubic meters of natural gas will be saved, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 160,000 tons.
Earlier Trend reported, UAE’s Masdar company won the tender for plant construction in October 2019. It pledged to supply electricity for 25 years at a price of 2.679 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Asia Development Bank provided up to $60 million to finance the project. The station became the first industrial-scale power plant based on renewable energy sources (RES).
The project company Nur Navoi Solar LLC will manage the station in the future.
Currently, Uzbekistan generates 85 percent of its electricity at thermal power plants. Thanks to solar energy, the country will be able to reduce its dependence on natural gas and coal.
