EU with Georgian GNERC implements project in field of renewable energy sources

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 8

Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (GNERC) has launched the fourth EU-funded public services twinning project - Regulating Renewable Energy Sources in Georgia, Trend reports citing GNERC.

According to GNERC, the project will provide a framework for reforming the tariff system for calculating tariffs for transmission and distribution system operators, creating incentive schemes for suppliers and consumers in retail markets, developing the structure of relevant by-laws, and focusing on the use of renewable energy.

According to the regulator, the opening ceremony of the project was held remotely, which was attended by representatives of GNERC, the government of Georgia, EU member states, the diplomatic corps, international and donor organizations, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.

The objective of the 4th Twinning project is to support the development of renewable energy sources by bringing the regulatory framework on the electricity and natural gas markets in Georgia in line with EU standards. The project lasts 27 months and is implemented by the Austrian Energy Regulatory Authority (E-Control) in cooperation with the German Federal Grid Agency (BNetzA). The direct beneficiary of the project is the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (GNERC).

“The EU is proud to support a new twinning project that, based on EU experience and standards, is helping the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission improve the functioning of the energy market,” said Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Georgia.
