By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

The “comeback” of coal in the European power mix is a short-term phenomenon, Sindre Knutsson, Vice President in Rystad Energy's markets team with focus on global natural gas and LNG told Trend.

“Still, I think Europe has experienced what the alternative to gas is in the short to medium term. Europe has further seen the importance of having a reliable back of source of energy in periods of intermittent renewables. Natural gas will be important to fill this role in the short to medium term, while batteries as storage will be a longer-term solution,” she said.

Knutsson went on to add that whether gas and nuclear can be considered green will depend on the alternative fuel in each gas market.

“From a Co2 perspective, nuclear can be considered as “green”. Countries like Poland plans to use nuclear to replace coal in their power mix in order to reduce Co2 emissions. While gas cannot be considered as “green” directly, it can indirectly contribute to replace coal in Europe. Both Poland and Germany are set to increase the use of gas in ordered to reduce total Co2 emissions in the power sector by replacing coal,” she explained.
