The volume of Turkmen gas swapping to Azerbaijan through Iran may reach 15 billion cubic meters per year, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji said, Trend reports citing IRIB.
He made the remark after a meeting with Turkmen officials.
The minister noted that currently, 2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually is being swapped to Azerbaijan via Iran.
Owji also added that discussions were conducted with Turkmen officials on the development of bilateral cooperation in the field of energy, including gas swaps, oil and petrochemicals.
"In the coming days, Iran and Turkmenistan will sign several cooperation documents on the energy exchange," he said.
On November 28, 2021, a tripartite contract on the swapping of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran per year was signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
The implementation of the contract began on January 1, 2022. As a result of the contract, the reduction of gas pressure in the northern and north-eastern regions of Iran will be prevented.
