BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 31. Iran has launched operations on the second phase of the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility in the Razavi Khorasan Province (north-eastern Iran), Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Oil Minister Javad Owji, and other officials attended the opening event.

On December 22, 2021, a contract has been signed between Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company and MAPNA Group on the launch of the second phase of the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility.

According to the contract, the operations will be completed in three years and the second phase will be used for 20 years. The contract is worth $2.2 billion.

As part of the contract, 28 wells will be drilled, a gas collection center will be built, compressors and other necessary equipment will be installed.

Currently, 10 million cubic meters of gas daily could be pumped into the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility in Phase 1. The goal is to increase the figure to 200 million cubic meters in Phase 2.

Furthermore, 20 million cubic meters of gas daily can be taken from in Phase 1. It is also planned to increase the figure to 40 million cubic meters in Phase 2.

The first phase of the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility was commissioned in 2014.

During the first 10 months of the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021, through January 20, 2022), 1.66 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped into the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility, which is 11 percent less than in the same period preceding Iranian year.

At the same time, 1.44 billion cubic meters of gas were taken from the storage facilities for the reporting period, which is 57 percent more than in the same period preceding the Iranian year.
