BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 8. A new wind power plant (WPP) with a capacity of 60 megawatts, which is being built 140 kilometers from Kazakhstan’s Almaty, is planned to be put into operation by early August this year, Trend reports with reference to Kazakh Samruk-Energy JSC company.

The station will generate 225.7 million kilowatts per hour of electricity per year. The project is important for the region with its environmental component in addition to production characteristics, the company said.

The construction and launch of the WPP will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 206,000 tons and will also replace about 89,000 tons of fuel per year.

The energy facility is being built in the Yenbekshikazakh district of the Almaty region in the so-called Shelek corridor - a unique region for the development of renewable energy potential, where the average annual wind speed at a height of 50 meters is 7.8 meters per second, the flux density is 310 watts per square meter, company noted.

The capacity of the wind farm is planned to be increased to 300 megawatts in the future, the press service of the company said.

The project, with a total cost of 37.4 billion tenge ($81.5 million), provides for the construction of 24 wind turbines, each with a nominal capacity of 2.5 megawatts, a substation, overhead power lines, and related infrastructure. The main equipment of the station is produced by the company "GoldWind", the company added.

The project is being implemented by the Kazakh electric power holding Samruk-Energy JSC in partnership with the Chinese corporation Power China.
