BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 3. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), expansion of Revithoussa, the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), as well as Alexandroupoli FSRU have been important to Greece’s relative energy security at this particular moment, Geoffrey Ross Pyatt, the US ambassador to Greece, said in an interview with Kathimerini, Trend reports.
He noted that in so many ways Greece is redrawing the energy map of Southeastern Europe.
“Our work with Greece on projects like the Alexandroupoli floating regasification unit, the expansion of the Revithoussa Terminal, the gas interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), Greece-North Macedonia gas interconnector, and the proposed East Mediterranean electricity interconnections offer the prospect of Greece developing its role as a hub for bringing those gas resources to countries in Europe which are much more vulnerable than you are to the manipulation of Russian energy supplies,” said the ambassador.
The IGB project enables the transmission of gas and supplies from new sources, making it key to Bulgaria's energy security and part of real diversification of its gas source. The capacity of the project is three billion cubic meters with the option to reach five billion cubic meters. Half of the throughput capacity of the interconnector is already reserved. A contract has been signed for the supply of one billion cubic meters from Shah Deniz 2 based on a long-term contract with Bulgargaz.
As the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP has the capacity to transport approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per annum (bcm/a) to several markets in Europe. The pipeline is also designed with the potential to expand its throughput capacity up to 20 bcm/a.
TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as decarbonisation objectives.
