BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 27. Iran needs $4 billion to convert the existing gas meters with smart ones, according to preliminary estimates, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni said, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

He made the remark at a meeting on the development of cooperation with startups in the use of smart systems for the distribution of natural gas in Tehran on June 27.

“In this regard, a 4-year plan has been prepared in the country. If needed funds are provided, the plan can be fully implemented at the expense of local potential. Because, about 99 percent of the country's needs in the gas sector can be met by local potential,” Chegeni said.

He said Iran's National Gas Company (NIGC) intends to better meet the country's gas needs and hopefully, the startup companies can be of help.

In this regard, the production of smart meters is a priority for Iran," the deputy minister added.

The CEO emphasized that the NIGC has more than 26 million gas subscribers in the country. Last year, more than 232 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied to subscribers in the country. This figure has no analogues in the world.
