Iran can become world's biggest natural energy hub - opinion

TEHRAN, Iran, August 5. A member of the Energy Commission of Iran's parliament Mostafa Nakhaie, talking to Trend, explained the capacity of the agreement between Iran and Russia's Gazprom to develop Iran's gas exports infrastructure.

“Iran must put the cooperation with all countries, on the agenda,” Iranian MP Mostafa Nakhaie told Trend.

Referring to the Russia`s potential, he noted that Russian is a major actor in the global energy markets, with the world's largest gas reserves.

Therefore, he says that Iran as a country with both valuable experience and rich hydrocarbon resources, must put the interaction between the two countries on the agenda.

Nakhai said that the agreement between National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Russian gas producer Gazprom is valuable from this point of view.

According to the MP, Iran's location in the region is geographically strategic.

“Iran has a high geographical advantage in the region, which if managed well can help Iran become the world's biggest natural energy hub,” he said.

He referred to Iran, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan`s natural gas swap agreement.

“Such agreements that has started with Turkmenistan will help the country to become a gas hub in the region,” said MP.

In November 2021, Iran, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan signed a natural gas swap agreement, under which Iran annually delivers 1.5 to 2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan.

A member of Energy Commission of the parliament pointed out that the expansion of energy diplomacy with different countries should have been better pursued in the past.

The official said that the new administration of Iran has started a new approach.

In mid-July, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Russian gas producer Gazprom (GAZP.MM) signed a memorandum of understanding worth around $40 billion.
