BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 16. At the current stage, there is no need to build new gas pipelines from Azerbaijan to Europe, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Bulgaria Huseyn Huseynov told Fakti.bg, Trend reports.
He noted that Europe imports natural gas from Azerbaijan through the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), which includes four sections: Shah Deniz-2 project, the extension of the South Caucasus Gas Pipeline (SCP), the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
“The corridor passes through seven countries - Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania and Italy, and Italy is its end point. As of December 31, 2020, natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe is already being delivered to Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. Southern Gas Corridor also has the potential to expand its capacity. Azerbaijan has more gas reserves in its part of the Caspian Sea and gas exports to various parts of Europe could be increased in the future. These additional quantities of natural gas could be supplied through the expansion of the SGC. Therefore, at the current stage, there is no need to build new gas pipelines from Azerbaijan to Europe,” Huseynov explained.
