BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 16. Iran's gas import from Turkmenistan has been suspended since the morning of January 12, 2023, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji said at a meeting in Razavi Khorasan Province on January 15, Trend reports.

The minister said that the reason for this is that there are certain problems with the gas supply in Turkmenistan.

“Due to the suspension of gas imports, a number of steps are being taken to continue the supply of gas to the northern and north-eastern regions of the country,” he added.

According to Owji, there have been restrictions on gas supply in the southern parts of Iran's Razavi Khorasan Province since yesterday. That’s why citizens were immediately provided with liquid fuel.

“The instruction of Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, regarding the suspension of the activity of educational institutions and government offices in the capital of Iran, Tehran, has greatly helped solve the country's gas supply problem. Thus, gas consumption in Tehran decreased by 2.5 million cubic meters over the past 1 day,” the minister noted.

Currently, Iran produces 977 million cubic meters of rich gas daily. 843 million cubic meters are supplied to the country's gas network after processing. At present, gas consumption in residential buildings and commercial facilities in Iran is around 700 million cubic meters per day.

Reportedly, Turkmenistan's gas export to Iran is carried out within the framework of the gas swap contract signed between Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

On November 28, 2021, a tripartite contract on the swapping of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran per year was signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The implementation of the contract began on January 1, 2022.

According to the memorandum signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in June, the gas swap has been doubled.
