BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 5. The volume of gas supplied into thermal power plants in Iran increased by approximately 3.4 billion cubic meters, during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through June 21, 2023), compared to the same period in the last year, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni said, Trend reports.
The deputy minister noted that a total of 21.8 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied to the country's power plants in 3 months.
“On average, 237 million cubic meters of gas daily were supplied to the country's TPPs,” he added.
Taking into account the price difference between natural gas and oil products, $550 million was saved as a result of providing gas instead of oil products to TPPs for 3 months, according to Chegeni.
Chegeni said that at the same time, the release of 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the environment was prevented in 3 months.
Reportedly, Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters.
There are currently 616 power units operating in 134 TPPs in Iran. The power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is 74,198 megawatt-hours.
Overall, Iran’s thermal power plants generated more than 80 million megawatts of electricity within the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through June 21, 2023).
