BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 2. Iran has increased its gas imports from Turkmenistan to an average of 7.5 million cubic meters per day, an official of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Saeed Aghli said, Trend reports.
Even on some days, the imports have reached up to 10 million cubic meters per day,” Aghli added.
The official expressed hope that this would ensure a stable gas supply in the country during the winter season, along with the use of underground gas storage facilities.
Previously, Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji has noted in a statement that gas imports from Turkmenistan would start in May 2023, and added that the daily volume would be 10 million cubic meters.
Owji also said that this would increase the capacity of the gas network in the north and northeast regions of the country.
Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, according to NIGC, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran’s gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters. Iran exports only a small portion of the gas produced in the country, about 6 percent.
