BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Iran’s Sarajeh underground gas storage facility, located in Qom Province (northern Iran), is vital for providing gas to Tehran and its neighboring areas, Executive Director of Iran’s Central Oil Fields Company (ICOFC), Mehdi Heydari said, Trend reports.
Heydari noted that a total of 811 million cubic meters of gas were pumped into the Sarajeh underground gas storage facility operating under the ICOFC since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023).
The director also said that the volume of gas pumped into the mentioned storage is expected to reach 840 million cubic meters by the end of the 8th month (November 21, 2023).
He added that during the winter months (4 months), the facility will supply 890 million cubic meters of gas to consumers.
The Sarajeh gas field was discovered in 1956 and has produced 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas and 3.5 million barrels of gas condensate for Iran. However, it only has 8.5 billion cubic meters of gas reserves left, and only 20 percent of them can be extracted with current technologies. Therefore, Iran decided to convert the field into an underground storage facility in 2012 after creating the necessary infrastructure. The facility can store up to 3.1 billion cubic meters of gas, which are injected in 8 months and withdrawn in 4 months of the year. The facility also adds some gas to the reservoir when it releases gas.
