BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 29. The National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) is implementing two projects to collect and use the gas that is burned off during oil production, CEO of the NISOC Alireza Daneshi said, Trend reports.

The director mentioned that the projects are expected to be finished in 18 months and will cover five oil fields (Ahvaz, Karun, Ramhormoz, Masjed Soleyman and Marun) in Khuzestan and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces.

He added that 56 percent of the work carried out within the framework of two projects on the collection of flare gas has been completed.

Daneshi also stated that the projects will collect a total of 842 million cubic feet (about 23.85 million cubic meters) of flare gas per day, which can be used for various purposes.

“So, 593 million cubic feet (about 16.8 million cubic meters) of flare gas daily within the framework of the 1st project, and 249 million cubic feet (about 7.05 million cubic meters) within the framework of the 2nd project,” he said.

Iran is one of the largest oil producers in the world, but it is also one of the biggest gas flarers. Last Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), the country produced about 114 million cubic meters of associated gas per day, of which only 79.6 million cubic meters were collected and the rest were flared.

The National Iranian South Oil Company, a subordinate of the National Iranian Oil Company, operates 45 large and small hydrocarbon deposits in an area of 400,000 square kilometers from Iran's Bushehr Province to the north of Khuzestan Province.

The company extracts about 80 percent of Iran's crude oil and 16 percent of its gas.
