BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 13. Croatia anticipates the situation with the Ionian-Adriatic Pipeline (IAP) initiative to be cleared following the EU elections for key EU offices that will be held in June 2024, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Croatia to Azerbaijan Branko Zebić told Trend.
"Croatia still supports the idea of establishing the IAP, although there has been no progress on this idea for a long time, unfortunately. We are trying to promote and raise interest in this project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania, as the realization of this project could be relevant for South-Eastern Europe. There are other ideas in the EU, and there could be more clarity after the elections in the EU structures this year," the ambassador said.
According to him, the IAP could be an interconnector between the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the port of Krk in Croatia.
This LNG terminal in Krk is currently undergoing expansion and will be capable of handling 6.1 bcm of gas in 2025.
In the case of the implementation of the IAP project, a 511-kilometer pipeline with a total capacity of 5 bcm per year will be built.
Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina were expected to receive 1 bcm each from the pipeline (if built), Montenegro 0.5 bcm, and Croatia and its neighboring countries 2.5 bcm.
To note, TAP earlier signed memoranda of understanding and cooperation with the developers of this project, in particular Plinacro (Croatia), BH-Gas (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Geoplin Plinovodi (Slovenia), as well as with the governments of Montenegro and Albania.
