BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 2. Romanian companies Transgaz and Romanian Chemical Company held talks in Baku with SOCAR on the possible use of Azerbaijan's gas for the production of fertilizers in Romania and the supply of a part of fertilizers to Azerbaijan, an informed source exclusively told Trend.

"Initial discussions were undertaken in Baku about using Azerbaijani gas supplied to Europe as a raw material for fertilizer manufacture through the Romanian Chemical Company's Chimcomplex subsidiary. If this proposal is successful, some fertilizers could be supplied from Romania to Azerbaijan," the source stressed.

According to him, Chimcomplex has 70 years of experience in the production of various chemical products, but is the only producer of biocidal active substances demanded in the agrosphere in Romania.

"Gas is a basic ingredient used in the manufacturing of many types of fertilizers. This Romanian firm presently requires approximately 2 billion cubic meters of gas each year. SOCAR has heard the Romanian side's suggestions and will analyze them, taking into account that Romania wants to expand gas purchases from Azerbaijan," the source added.

Note that the annual contract signed by SOCAR and Romgaz for Romania's purchase of Azerbaijani gas in the amount of up to 1 bcm per year expired on March 31, 2024.

The parties agreed to discuss the continuation of such cooperation for the period of 2024-2025 but will detail the nuances later.

With a mission of contributing to sustainable development and energy security locally, regionally, and internationally, SOCAR Carbamide has been producing nitrogen fertilizers in Sumgayit for several years and exports about 90-95 percent of them.
