BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 11. The STAR oil refinery near Türkiye's Izmir, controlled by SOCAR Turkiye Enerji A.S. (STEAS - a subsidiary of SOCAR), imported 11.366 million tons of crude oil in 2023, up 2.95 percent from 2022, the annual report of Türkiye's Energy Market Regulatory Board said, Trend reports.
According to the report, Türkiye imported a total of more than 31.395 million tons of crude oil in 2023 (down 6.24 percent from 2022), meaning STAR refineries accounted for 36.2 percent of all oil imported by Türkiye in 2023.
Of the total oil imports, 63.8 percent was for the Tupras refinery (over 20 million tons).
To note, the STAR refinery has been in operation since 2018 (construction cost $7 billion). Its current refining capacity is 13 million tons of oil per year.
The refinery provides Petkim's petrochemical complex with feedstock (it gives this complex all the naphtha).
The remaining types of petroleum products, including diesel fuel and jet fuel, go both to the Turkish domestic market and for export to the Mediterranean region.
