BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 13. Greece's purchase of gas from Azerbaijan in 2024 may decrease compared to 2023, a source told Trend.

"Greece cumulatively bought about 2 bcm of gas from Azerbaijan in 2023 at a cost of nearly 872 million euros. A total of 1.2 bcm of gas from the Shah Deniz field is scheduled to be delivered from Azerbaijan Gas Supply Company to Greece in 2024," the source noted.

The forecast decrease may be related to Greece's plans to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG), given the operation of its two LNG terminals.

However, Greece has been purchasing Azerbaijani gas since December 2020 and has received more than 3.6 bcm through the Southern Gas Corridor over 3.5 years following a 25-year gas contract with Shah Deniz signed in Baku in 2013.

Besides these contracted volumes, Greece periodically buys Azerbaijani gas on the European spot market.

Azerbaijani gas covered 18 percent of Greece's blue fuel needs in 2023.
