Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Aliyev / The construction of new hydropower stations on the Azerbaijani rivers will enable the partial resolution to the problem regarding an electricity deficit in the country.
Etibar Pirverdiyev, the President of Azerenerji, the Azerbaijani energy company, stated in Baku on 1 June to an Azerbaijani-Korean workshop on electric power, that private can participate in 1-, 3- and even 5-MW hydroelectric power station. Azerbaijan has great potential to develop the hydro-power engineering," Pirverdiyev noted.
In the first quarter of 2007, 6bln KW of electricity was produced at the thermal energy powerstation in Azerbaijan and only 0.6bln KW/h at the hydropower stations.
Pirverdiyev said that in 2006 production capacity of Azerbaijani energy system increased by 450 MW. "The construction of a gas steam rig at the Sumgayit power station is underway, while the construction of a module power station in Sangachal had commenced. Work regarding the reconstruction of Ali Bayramly power grid is in progress," he added.
The current capacity of electricity production in the country is 5,500 MW. In the subsequent 3-4 years it will be increased to 10,000 MW.
