In January-July this year, interbank payments worth 152 billion manats were made in Azerbaijan, which is 46 percent more than in the same period last year, said Tamerlan Rustamov, head of the infrastructure control department of the Financial Market Supervisory Authority of Azerbaijan (FIMSA), Trend reports from a press conference on Sept. 10.

He said that in the first seven months of this year, 7.38 million payment cards were issued, which is 31.7 percent more compared to the same period last year.

The volume of operations carried out using plastic cards amounted to 11.9 billion manats, 21 percent of which accounted for non-cash payments, he noted.

The volume of electronic trading operations increased 5.9 times to 1.66 billion manats, he added.

According to data released by the International Telecommunication Union, there were 104 mobile phones per 100 people in 2018, he said.

“This means that Azerbaijan has infrastructure for mobile payments,” he noted. “Also, the proposed Visa Token system will play an important role in the development of mobile payments.”
