About 73% of transactions on gov’t securities account for primary market in Azerbaijan

From January through November 2019, the total volume of operations on government securities on the Baku Stock Exchange (BSE) amounted to 11 billion manat ($6.4 billion), and their number amounted to 1,997 transactions, Trend reports referring to BSE.

For the same period of 2018, the volume of transactions on government securities amounted to 12.2 billion manat ($7.2 billion). As a result, the total volume of transactions carried out in the first 11 months 2019 decreased by 9.9 percent.

Among the operations, 1,460 transactions (73 percent of the total volume) for 10.2 billion manat ($6 billion) were carried out in the primary market, which is 15 percent less than in the period from January through November 2018. About 77 percent of transactions (1,116) of this volume were carried out on short-term notes of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) for a total of 9.5 billion manat ($5.6 billion, or a decrease of 14.5 percent).

The secondary market of government securities accounted for 537 operations totaling 800.4 million manat ($471.8 million). The specific weight amounted to 7.2 percent of the total volume and 26.9 percent of the total number of transactions on government securities.

Repo (repurchase) transactions on government securities amounted to 681.8 million manat ($401.9 million, or an increase of 81.6 percent). In total, from January through November this year, 555 Repo transactions were conducted at the BSE. This is 255 transactions more than in the first 11 months of the previous year.
