Number of microfinance institutions decreases in Georgia

Nineteen microfinance institutions (MFIs) were abolished in Georgia over the 11 months of 2019, while the number of branches of commercial banks increased, Trend reports citing the National Bank of Georgia (NBG).​

According to the bank, at the beginning of the year, 67 MFIs were operating in the country, while at the end of the year their number reached 48.

At the same time, the number of branches and service centers of commercial banks increased from 793 in 2018 to 823 by the end of 2019.

From January through November 2019, the number of currency exchange points decreased by 191 units compared to the same period of 2018 and reached 844. From January through November 2018, their number increased to 1,035.

By the end of November 2019, the number of credit institutions in Georgia reached 204.
