The European Union (EU) will provide 183 million euro to Georgia in the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Director General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, European Commissioner Lawrence Meredith wrote on Twitter that the EU will allocate a total of 962 million euro to six countries of Eastern Partnership to struggle with the pandemic.

“EU is providing 80 million euro of immediate and 883 million euro of short term support to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine for COVID-19 outbreak. Of this amount, Georgia will receive 183 million euros,” Meredith Tweeted.

The Eastern Partnership (EaP) is a joint policy initiative which aims to deepen and strengthen relations between the European Union (EU), its Member States and its six Eastern European Partners. The EaP is intended to provide an avenue for discussions of trade, economic strategy, travel agreements, and other issues between the EU and its Eastern European neighbors. It also aims at building a common area of shared democracy, prosperity, stability, and increased cooperation.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Georgia has reached 208 on April 8.

On March 21, Georgia declared a state of emergency until April 21 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan - which is an international transport hub - began at a fish market in late December 2019. Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.

The WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11.
