The pilot stage of the state program for general accessibility to internet Open Net will be launched soon in Georgia, said Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, Trend reports via Georgian media.
Turnava pointed out that the World Bank has reiterated its readiness to co-finance the project together with the Georgian government.
The main purpose of the program is to cover Georgian villages and provide them with high-speed internet.
“The program will cover about 800 settlements where the optic-fiber cable may reach. In the case of necessity, we are ready to expand the area,” minister said.
According to her, the state program for the development of broadband, fiber-optic infrastructure in Georgia is almost in its initial phase.
Earlier, Turnava held an online conference with World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus Sebastian Molineus. During the meeting, it was noted that the World Bank remains a strong and loyal partner of Georgia and will support the government’s efforts to restore the health care, social protection and economy sectors that play an important role in mitigating the impact of the pandemic on the country and its population.
