Azerbaijan sees decrease in unemployment

The number of hired employees in Azerbaijan grew by 37,000 persons or 2.3 percent year on year, reaching 1.68 million people as of March 1, 2021, Trend reports on Apr. 19 referring to the State Statistical Committee.

According to the committee, 915,500 of them were employed in the public sector, and 763,000 - in the private sector.

"Some 19.7 percent of wage earners from the total volume in the country were involved in education, 18.5 percent in trade and repair of vehicles, 12.7 percent – industry, 8.3 percent – health and public services, 7.3 percent - construction, and 6.7 percent – public administration, defense, and social security,” said the committee. “Besides, 4.5 percent of the employees were engaged in transport and warehousing, 3.5 percent – agriculture, forestry and fishery, 3.4 percent - professional, scientific and technical activities, 1.7 percent - financial and insurance activities, and 13.7 percent in other sectors of the economy."

According to preliminary data, from January through February 2021, the average monthly nominal salary of the hired employees in Azerbaijan shrank by 2.8 percent compared to the same period of 2020 by making up 692.3 manat ($407.2).

At the same time, in terms of the average salary the growth was observed in the mining industry, financial and insurance sectors, scientific and technical activities, information and communications, as well as in the transport and the warehousing sectors.
