World Bank to finance development of water services sector in Uzbekistan

The World Bank and Uzbekistan signed financial and grant agreements on the development of the water supply services sector in Uzbekistan, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Finance of Uzbekistan.

On May 17 this year, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Finance of Uzbekistan with the Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia Anna Bjerde, who is in Uzbekistan on an official visit from May 14 to 18 as part of her first working tour to Central Asia.

As a result of negotiations between the World Bank and the government of Uzbekistan, a ceremony of financial and grant agreements on the project "Development of the water supply services sector and its institutional support in Uzbekistan" was held.

According to the information, a concessional loan from the WB in the amount of $239 million is allocated for the implementation of the project, as well as a grant from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs in the amount of $7.8 million.

It is reported that as part of the project, more than 500,000 people in three regions of Uzbekistan will have access to better water supply and sewerage services. It is planned to modernize sewage treatment facilities in the cities of Nukus, Takhiatash, and Khodjeyli in the Karakalpakstan Republic. Also, the water supply and sewerage networks in the Syrdarya region and the city of Kattakurgan in the Samarkand region will be expanded and reconstructed.

According to the information, the World Bank is currently providing assistance to Uzbekistan through technical assistance and financing of 24 projects. They contribute to the implementation of important economic reforms, the development of agriculture, health care, education, water supply and sanitation, energy, transport, social protection systems, modernization of urban and rural infrastructure, as well as mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on health, the economy and citizens of the country.
