Subsistence minimum hit a record high in August in Georgia, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
According to the report, the subsistence minimum of a working-age male amounted to 221.1 lari ($71.23) in August. On the one hand, it indicates the price increase. For comparison, the subsistence minimum increased by 2.8 lari (90 cents) in August compared to July, while the index is grown by 38.8 lari ($12.50) in August year-on-year.
The increase in the subsistence minimum is related to the high inflation, as inflation hit a record high in the country for the last 10 years and amounted to 12.8 percent.
As of May, the subsistence minimum for the average consumer is 195.8 lari ($63.08), which is 2.5 lari (81 cents) more than in the previous month, while the growth totals to 34.4 lari ($11.08) year-on-year.
The National Statistics Office calculates the value of the subsistence minimum on the basis of the minimum cost of items in the food basket. The minimum food basket contains 40 different products such as bread, cereals, meat, dairy products, vegetables, and confectionery.
