Iran boosts rice imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 20

The volume of rice imported to Iran for the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21, 2021), increased by 24 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year, an official of Iranian Government Trade Corporation (GTC), Hojjat Baratali said, Trend reports citing the corporation’s website.

The official noted that Iran has imported a total of 665,000 tons of rice during the reporting period.

He also added that 220,000 tons of rice were imported by the GTC, while 445,000 tons by private sector in 8 months.

Baratali said that Iran’s rice cultivation and sale has decreased due to drought in the country this year. This has resulted in rising rice prices in country.

Reportedly, the average price of 1 kg of Iranian rice in country varies between 420,000-640,000 rials (about $10-$15), while the price of 1 kg of rice imported from abroad – 130,000-320,000 rials (about $3-$7).
