BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. The legal tools and legislation occupy an important place in the climate struggle, and lawyers should make even more efforts to ensure climate justice, the chairperson of the Bar Association of Azerbaijan Anar Baghirov said at the international conference "Law and Climate," Trend reports.
“As is known, climate change is one of the most acute and global challenges of our time. This issue concerns not only the protection of the environment and natural resources but also affects human rights, the economy, and social justice. The effects of climate change, such as natural disasters, shrinking agricultural land, and water scarcity, lead to human rights violations in various countries,” he said.
According to him, climate change particularly affects vulnerable populations, worsening their living conditions, exacerbating poverty, and increasing inequality.
“In this sense, law is essential to fighting climate change. The law is crucial to this fight, and attorneys must do more to ensure climate justice. National and international cooperation and legal reform are needed. Azerbaijan joins worldwide climate change accords and promotes sustainable development. Article 39 of our Constitution provides every citizen the right to live in a good environment as part of human rights,” he noted.
Baghirov mentioned that climate change poses a serious threat to the fulfillment of this right.
“Environmental degradation, natural disasters, and lack of resources are directly related to the violation of human rights, including the right to life and health,” he added.
