BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. It is crucial to explore opportunities for increasing youth involvement in climate-related decision-making, Advocacy Lead at the Youth Negotiators Agency (YNA) Charlie Bevis said at YNA's COP29 Youth Leadership Forum in Baku, Trend reports.
“Our discussion today focuses on the future of YNA and the broader involvement of young people in climate decision-making. To foster further growth and engagement, we must critically examine what it means for young people to have a seat at the table—equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions to addressing climate issues," he said.
Bevis also highlighted that YNA is participating in COP29 because the agency is deeply concerned about the climate crisis and possesses valuable knowledge to share.
“We want to have the opportunity to share our experiences not just within the decision-making process at COP but also at related events,” he added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has kicked off in Baku. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
