Azerbaijan to Announce Contend on License Issue to Render 3G Communication  Services –Minister

Kazakhstan, Astana / Trend corr.К.Konirova / The contend will be announced on licensed communication service of the 3rd generation (3G) in Azerbaijan in the first quarter of 2008, Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Communication and Information Technology Ministry, reported on a visit to Astana on 14 November. Abbasov takes part at the meeting of the Regional Commonwealth in communication sphere.

Earlier, three Azerbaijani GSM-operators, Azercell Telecom, Azerfon and Bakcell, demonstrated interest to render the service.

According to the Minister, the frequencies for three operators are being developed.

The number of wireless mobile subscribers will reach 5.2mln people n Azerbaijan in 2008. The number may increase by 5.9mln in 2009, 6.2mln in 2010 and 6.8mln in 2011.

Today the number of wireless mobile users exceeds 4mln people. There are three wireless mobiles GSM-operators in Azerbaijan.

3G was developed by the International Electron Communication Union and is called as the International Mobile Telecommunications 2000.

There are two standards of 3G: UMTS or W-CDMA and CDMA2000. UMTS is expanded mainly in Europe, CDMA2000 - in Asia and United States. According to the report by the Wireless Intelligence, there were about 364mln 3G subscribers at the end of November 2006, 93.5mln joined UMTS and 271,1mln - СDMA2000.
