Number of Internet Users Increases by Almost 2.4mln

Uzbekistan, Tashkent, 30 October / corr Trend T.Zhukov / Eighty-three 83 users of Internet fall on every 1,000 of Uzbekistan's residents, Trend told in Tashkent.

The number of Internet users increased by 2.37mln people over nine months, the sitting of board of Uzbek agency of communication and informatization (UzACI) told.

The number of Internet users in Uzbekistan made up 2.01mln on 1 January 2008, or 74 users per 1,000 citizens.

Total speed of access to international information networks makes up 515 Mbit/sec at present in Uzbekistan, the administration of telecommunication technologies and services of UzACI told Trend .

The number of domains, which were registered in the UZ zone, makes up 7,350 at present. 5,766 domains (increase by 21%) were registered at the beginning of 2008. Only 3,184 new domains were registered and 1,586 ones were removed since the beginning of this year.

Seven official registrars of the UZ domain operate in the country. The cost of registration of domain is varies from $16 to $25 in Uzbekistan. A centre of development and application of computer and information technologies (Uzinfocom) at UzACI is the administrator of UZ domain of second level.

The UZ national domain of upper level was created in April 1995. A private person was its owner a few years ago. In August 2001, the administration of Internet address space (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) handed over administration of UZ national domain to Euracom Equipment GmBH, a German company, which was represented by Tomas Ltd in Uzbekistan. In March 2003, UZ domain was nationalized by Uzbek government.

In 2002, the Uzbek government adopted a program on development of computerization and information and communication technologies by 2010. It is planed to create 45,000 ports of collective Internet access under the program. The number of Internet users will be increased to 3.32mln by 2010.
