The Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry's Teleradio Production Union (PU) extends coverage area of TV channels in the Lerik, Agsu and Ganja regions of the country, then ministry reported.
According to the agency, the PU holds work on the installation of television transmitters of digital television and the formation of a social package of television programs. Analog radio relay links consisting of six intervals will be reconstructed and digital transmitters between Baku and Lerik will be installed at the initial stage.
Commissioning of new translators will vastly expand broadcast of TV and radio programs in the surrounding areas.
The PU uses equipment of the Kvant-Efir and Elektronika companies to expand broadcast coverage. The company has analog devices and digital ready equipment, allowing the transition to digital broadcasting, which has already begun in Azerbaijan.
The development of digital broadcasting in the country is a priority of the ministry, which intends to distribute digital broadcasting throughout the country in the near future. The transition to digital television will replace the analog signal.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has instructed all countries to implement a full transition to digital television by 2015. Under a the plan submitted to the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers, a full transition to digital television in Azerbaijan will occur by 2013.
Broadcasting of digital TV is carried out on the MPEG-4. In order to transfer to the digital standard population needs to obtain decoder. The cost of these devices is 40-50 manat. In addition, television sets with built-in decoders are available at the market.
About 50 percent of the Azerbaijani territory will be covered by digital broadcasting standard by late 2010. But according to the work plan of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, full transition to digital television broadcasting is expected in 2013.
With the transition to a new broadcasting standard an opportunity to provide new and innovative public services will also be provided. The cost of connecting to additional channels and services will be determined in accordance with their quantity. At present, the Public Association appealed to all the national broadcasters to transfer to a new broadcasting standard. Broadcasting of digital TV is carried out on the MPEG-4. AzTV TV and ITV channels are among the local TV channels broadcasted in a digital format.
