Uzbekistan plans to increase its internet bandwidth to 1.2 terabits per second by the end of 2018, Uzbek Minister for Information Technologies and Communications Development Azim Akhmedkhadjaev said, local media reported.

“We plan to expand the bandwidth of our internet channel from the current 160 gigabits per second to a minimum of 1.2 terabits per second, which is almost a 10-fold increase,” he said. “We intend to complete this work by the end of this year, and perhaps we will finish it earlier, as every effort is made to fulfill this task.”

He noted that the ministry managed for a short time to attract a foreign team of qualified specialists, who understand and know modern trends in the development of telecommunications.

“There are more than 20 foreign specialists in Uzbekistan working to expand the country’s Internet capabilities, as well as about 15 specialists in the development of other opportunities for information and communication technologies (ICT),” he said.

He also added that the efforts made will include not only the physical expansion of the Internet cable, but also measures aimed at resolving the entire range of issues, including gaps in the regulatory framework.

“This is huge work that will soon give a tangible result,” Akhmedkhadjaev said. “This year alone we plan to lay about 2,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable in order to bring quality Internet to all the endpoints. In the first quarter of this year, we managed to lay 300 kilometers of fiber-optic cable.”

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a meeting on the development of ICT in the country, instructed officials to sharply reduce prices for Internet access and to increase the Internet speed by a minimum of four times, bringing it to the level of the CIS member countries by 2020.
