The isotopes necessary for the commissioning of a sterilization plant will be delivered to Azerbaijan by the end of December, Chairman of the Nuclear Research Center Adil Garibov told Trend.
He noted that some of the isotopes will be delivered from Russia, while some will be supplied from Hungary.
"Loading of the isotopes into the sterilization plant will begin in January 2018," Garibov said.
It will take approximately three weeks to load the isotopes into the plant, after which the plant will be put into operation.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has inspected the sterilization plant project and is ready to provide necessary support in implementation of other projects.
The sterilization plant allows to apply the method of gamma irradiation for the destruction of microbes, which, in turn, increases the shelf life of agricultural products (grain, meat products, dried fruits, potatoes, etc.).
