Trend:

Implementation of LoRaWAN energy-efficient and long-range network may start in Azerbaijan, head of the department for research and production of Azerbaijan’s Sumaks Technologies company Elgun Hasanov told Trend.

He said that the mentioned technology may be applied in many industries, including sensor networks, security systems, smart homes, industry management and smart cities.

“LoRaWAN is a cutting-edge network technology,” he noted. “It was created under the auspices of the Lora Alliance organization for the usage of the LoRaWAN protocol as a single standard for low-power wide area networks (LPWAN). Low energy consumption and high security level are only a part of its advantages over other similar systems. The technology also allows determining location without using a GPS system. The technology uses ultra-low frequencies, which makes it ideal for application in areas such as security systems, smart homes and cities, and industrial management systems.”

Hasanov added that LoRaWAN has already been implemented in several countries.

“Amsterdam is the first city where a network of 10 LoRa Gateways using the IoT protocol was created using this technology,” he said. “In the network, information is transmitted within the city at a distance of 2-5 kilometers, and in the suburbs at a distance of up to 15 kilometers.”

“Such a network usually consists of two parts,” he added. “The first provides access to the internet in the traditional way, via Ethernet, 3G-4G and Wi-Fi. Its second segment consists of sensors connected to various devices. They are able, without using any commercial network, to transmit information about their location and conditions on the ground (weather, flood, fire, etc.) to the LoRa Gateways, which forward it via the internet to the necessary servers. Technology, especially in flood prone areas, can serve as an early warning service to the public about the arriving disaster.”

“In general, the scope of this technology’s application is quite extensive,” he said. “It is already used in many developed countries. Azerbaijan is also preparing for its introduction. Sumaks Technologies conducts research and negotiations in this direction.”
