Number of internet users in Kazakhstan exceeds 81%

As a result of modern telecommunications infrastructure creation in Kazakhstan, the percentage of internet users in the country amounted to 81.3 percent in 2018, Ministry of Digital Development, Defense and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan told Trend.

As stated by the source in the ministry, currently, the main goal within the development of Kazakhstan’s telecommunications sphere is the provision of rural population with broadband access to the internet.

The access to the internet in rural areas of the country is provided by using ADSL, CDMA/EVDO technologies, whereas the regional centers and towns use ADSL, FTTH, 3G, 4G technologies.

The source further stated that presently, the ministry is implementing a number of activities within the framework of Digital Kazakhstan program and in the framework of supply of the country's rural settlements with internet access and .

“These activities include a public private partnership project on provision of rural localities of Kazakhstan with broadband Internet access under the fiber-optic communication lines technology and the construction of wireless network using LTE/WLL technologies in settlements with the population over 50 residensts,” the source said.

As stated by the source, the pilot project on 5G network testing has been underway since the beginning of 2019.

“Over the course of half a year, the testing was carried out in Nur-Sultan and Almaty cities. Following the approval of international standards in 2021, the ministry in cooperation with state-owned ventures and operators will undertake a comprehensive work on implementation of 5G network on the territory of Kazakhstan,” the source concluded.
