The turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS terminals in Azerbaijan amounted to 2.2 billion manats in July 2019, which is 34.8 percent more than in the same period of 2018, Trend reports referring to Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).
According to the report, the total number of transactions with payment cards amounted to 14.873 million transactions (an increase of 43 percent) for the reporting period.Some 1.406 million transactions worth 109 million manats were carried out outside the country.
The number of transactions with debit cards (both domestically and abroad) amounted to 13.4 million transactions worth 2.08 billion manats, of which almost 6.8 million transactions worth 1.54 billion manats were carried out using ATMs in Azerbaijan, and 1.79 million operations worth 168 million manats via POS terminals.
In July 2019, bank customers carried out 1.475 million transactions worth 118 million manats via credit cards (both domestically and abroad). Over 220,000 operations worth 37 million manats were carried out using ATMs within the country, and 573,000 operations worth 28 million manats were carried out using POS terminals in the country.
Number of payment cards, ATMs and POS terminals
By the end of July 2019, the number of payment cards increased by 15.5 percent (compared to the same period of last year) to 7.13 million cards.
Most of the cards (i.e. 6.353 million cards) consist of debit cards. More precisely, 2.654 million consist of social cards, 2.157 million of salary cards, and 1.542 million of other types of cards. The number of credit cards for the indicated period amounted to 779,000.
As of Aug. 1, 2019, some 2,582 ATMs were operating in the country, 1,378 of them in Baku and 1,204 in other cities and districts of Azerbaijan.
The number of ATMs has increased by 80 or 3.2 percent since early 2019.
The number of POS terminals in the country amounted to 63,782, of which 37,278 were installed in Baku and 25,643 in other cities and districts of Azerbaijan.
The number of POS terminals has decreased by 2,328 or 0.35 percent since early 2019.
The volume of transactions in ATMs and POS terminals
In July 2019, 3.9 ATMs and 0.15 POS-terminals accounted for 1,000 people in Azerbaijan.
An average of 2,597.1 operations worth 587,501 manats were carried out per one ATM in July. The volume of one operation per one ATM amounted to 224.5 manats.
There was an average of 37.1 operations worth 3,061.8 manats per one POS terminal in July. The volume of one operation in the POS terminal amounted to 82.8 manats.
