Kazakhstan's energy sector digitalization boosts oil refining volumes

One of the main projects within the framework of economy sectors digitalization implemented within Digital Kazakhstan State Program is a transition to an extended overhaul period at Kazakh refineries, a representative of Kazakhstan’s Zerde National ICT Holding told Trend.

Zerde National ICT Holding is dealing with implementation of the 'Digital Kazakhstan' program in the country. The main goal of the program is improvement of Kazakhstan's economy competitiveness and quality of life through the progressive development of the digital ecosystem.

The Zerde official said that over two years, the program implementation led to positive results, creating 50,000 new jobs and increasing economic indicators as the total economic effect amounted to over 600 billion tenge ($1.4 billion).

Thus, one of the goals of the program is digitalization of economy sectors. Within the framework of this work on the creation of 17 intellectual deposits and 7 model factories is underway in country’s energy sector.

Some 13 enterprises of the mining and metallurgical complex and 112 enterprises of industry are undergoing technological re-equipment using elements of Industry 4.0 program, labor productivity has been increased by an average of 10 percent, production costs of enterprises have been reduced by 10 percent, and labor costs have been reduced by 30 percent.

One of the key projects is a ‘Transition to an extended overhaul period at refineries’ which led to two refineries (Atyrau Refinery and Pavlodar Refinery) being overhauled every three years.

“The switch to a 3-year extended overhaul period allows to increase refining volumes by an average of 300,000 tons per year by reducing downtime and stops for overhauls,” the representative said.

In turn, the agro-industrial complex has undergone new technologies introduction in 1,000 plant growing and 1,000 livestock farms, as well as creation of 49 digital farms.

“Overall, nine pilot farms and four precision farming landfills on over 7,000 hectares of land, decreased fuel and lubricants consumption by 44 tons, seeds by 175 tons, fertilizers by 365 tons, plant protection products by 4 tons. As part of the creation of electronic field maps, which are one of the elements of precision farming, 26 million hectares of sown area or 100 percent of the total sown area and 56.5 million hectares of pasture land or 78.5 percent have been digitized to date. As a result of the application of new agronomy technologies, an increase in grain yield was obtained, while the costs of the farmer were reduced by 20 percent,” the holding official said.

In turn, talking e-commerce the representative said that it drives digitalization.

“The development of electronic commerce provides Kazakhstan with a high potential for economic growth: development of trade, expansion of sales, access to world markets and the development of transit potential,” the holding official said.

Concluding, the representative said that the number of online shoppers has increased 1.3 times in 2019 (reaching 3.2 million people), whereas the volume of electronic commerce in the total volume of retail trade increased four times. At the same time, a total of 579 new online stores have been registered over the period of Digital Kazakhstan State Program Implementation.
