Georgia implementing new project to provide remote villages with internet

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 21

Within the framework of the pilot project of the state program of provision with internet, the construction of broadband fiber-optic infrastructure in the village of Ozurgeti, Guria region, Georgia began, Trend reports via the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

In this given region, the number of settlements is 49, households - 8,516, population - 28,576 people.

According to the ministry, in parallel with the construction of a pilot network, it is planned, jointly with the World Bank, to interconnect throughout Georgia - it will be about 1,000 settlements (including mountain villages). Approximately 500,000 people will benefit from the implementation of the broadband infrastructure provided by the project.

“The need for a high-quality, uninterrupted internet connection has become even more important in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, when a large part of the population has gone online. For this purpose, in cooperation with the Government of Georgia, the project "Log in Georgia" has been developed, which provides access to broadband internet in the regions. The project is being implemented with the support of the Communications Commission and under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia,” the ministry said in a statement.
