Pro-government cyber groups implement record transmission power of DDoS attacks - Group IB

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 4

By Sadraddin Aghjayev – Trend:

By implementing sophisticated attacks, pro-government cyber groups are showing particular interest in the telecom sector, Group-IB company, a provider of information security and protection against cyber threats, told Trend.

According to the company, pro-government cyber groups have implemented record transmission power of DDoS attacks at a speed of 2.3 TB / s or 809 million packets per second, which is a new record for the power of DDoS attacks.

In 2020, six groups associated with the special services have been active in the telecommunications sector.

Group-IB also noted that considering the growing confrontation between states, it is expected that the first attacks on telecom operators in order to cause logical network congestion will be recorded, and it will lead to a cascading effect as well as will affect many sectors of the economy.

In connection with the massive shift of companies’ employees to a remote mode of work, which may persist even after the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of attacks on home routers and data storage systems is increasing, as they allow advanced and pro-government attackers to more efficiently access corporate data without penetrating the perimeter of the organization, Group-IB noted.

For example, one of the Chinese pro-government hacker groups has increased its ability to spy on mobile operators, where for this purpose a special Trojan for Linux servers was developed, which allows intercepting SMS messages according to certain criteria.

However, due to the narrow application of the 5G network, predictions of the associated threats are not justified, but they remain potentially relevant for the next period.

“BGP interception (autonomous systems can exchange information and data is sent along the optimal route) or BGP route leakage remains a significant problem. Over the past year, nine such significant cases have been publicly recorded,” the company stated.
