Uzbekistan and Latvia discussed practical measures for close interaction with IT-Park Uzbekistan, whose residents are 465 companies, with StartUP Latvia and Latvian IT Cluster, Trend reports referring to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Latvia.

On April 21, 2021 the eighth meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Industrial and Scientific and Technical Cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia was held in the format of video communication, which was co-chaired by the Minister of Agriculture Jamshid Khodjaev from the Uzbek side was and the Minister of Agriculture Kaspars Gerhards from the Latvian side.

The co-chairs and speakers from both sides noted with satisfaction the continuation of the systemic dialogue and comprehensive cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia, despite the challenges of the pandemic. The size of mutual trade in 2020 amounted to $367.5 million.

A five-percent increase in the volume of freight turnover between Uzbekistan and Latvia at the end of 2020 was noted, even in the context of the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also, the agreement on the resumption by Uzbekistan Airways from May 3 of regular flights on the Tashkent-Riga-Tashkent route was highly appreciated, which will also contribute to an increase in mutual tourist flows. In addition, the sphere of digitalization of freight traffic is highlighted as a promising area.

At the same time, the parties emphasized the prospects for practical partnership in the field of ICT. The Latvian side invited Uzbek specialists to take part in such international events as TechChill and Digital Freedom Festival. Practical measures were discussed for close cooperation between IT-Park Uzbekistan, the residents of which are 465 companies, with StartUP Latvia and Latvian IT Cluster.

Following the meeting, an agreement was signed between the State Plant Quarantine Inspection under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia on cooperation in the field of plant quarantine and the Protocol of the eighth meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which provides for a specific list of agreements and promising areas of interaction in the field of economy, investment, trade, ICT, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, transport and logistics, education, culture, interregional contacts.
