BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 14

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

The US McAfee company (an antivirus software developer) registered such ransomware programs as REvil, RansomEXX, and Ryuk very often in the first quarter of 2021, McAfee told Trend on July 14.

“The volume of malicious software during the reporting period averaged 688 threats per minute,” McAfee said.

“This is by three percent or 40 threats more than in the first quarter of 2020,” McAfee said. “The computer threats in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 76 percent, in technology - by 54 percent, in education - by 46 percent, in finance and insurance - by 41 percent and in public administration - by 39 percent from the fourth quarter of 2020 through the first quarter of 2021."

Moreover, an analysis of the malware families detected in the first quarter of 2021 revealed the prevalence of ransomware REvil, RansomEXX, and Ryuk. They held the leading positions among the threats before the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack by DarkSide in May.

“The biggest volume of requests was observed in the US (775 billion) in the first quarter of this year,” McAfee said. “The detection rate of threats was low (0.31 percent). The malware was detected among 13.38 percent of cases out of 55 billion requests received from Russia.”

“Thus, the detection rate for Russian customers has become the highest one among the TOP-20 countries,” McAfee said. “The biggest changes in indicators compared to the previous quarter were observed in Turkey. The level of threat detection decreased from 9.76 percent to 4.8 percent, the number of requests reached 19 billion.”

The total number of requests related to cybersecurity for three months of 2021 in Azerbaijan reached 1,174, of which 96.5 percent were considered and met. The number of requests was 4,989 in 2020, of which 97 percent were considered and met.
