Azeri Communications Minister: Intel May Participate in Expanding Local Computer Production in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Babayeva / The Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan, Ali Abbasov, said on 14 March that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies will provide computers to poor layers of population at the expense of the project "Popular computers". According to him, presently the number of the computers in Azerbaijan is very low. At present 5-6 computers fall on each 100 people in the Country while the average world indicator is 20-25 computers. According to the Minister, the project aims to decrease the prices for computers and expand local computer production.

Presently Ministry's special working group attended by Microsoft and Intel is preparing proposals for the Government.

Abbasov said that Microsoft will present licensed program support that may prevent the spread of piratical products. If necessary, Intel will participate in expanding the local computer production. The Minister considers that firstly the computers should be realized on preferential terms for the educational and training institutions.

"The assessments show that relative to the social-economical situation in Azerbaijan, the number of the computers should be more. May be it is linked with weak propaganda or the issue that population do not feel special demand for computers. The project aims to stimulate the increase of demand," Minister said.
