BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 6. The number of tourists from the South Asian region, who visited Azerbaijan, considerably grew in January 2023, Trend reports via the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan.

According to the agency, this figure amounted to 7,893, up by 8.72 times compared to January 2022 (905).

The agency said that majority of the tourists from the above region accounted for India - 4,098 people (an increase of 8.57 times over the year), Pakistan - 3,271 (a growth of 9.88 times), Nepal - 230 (a growth of 28.75 times).

Next come Sri Lanka - 137 (up by 9.78 times), Bangladesh - 131 (an increase of 125.86 percent for the year), Afghanistan - 19 (up by 35.71 percent), and Maldives – seven (growth of 3.5 times).

In total, for the last five years, 389,129 tourists from South Asia (including 197,439 citizens of India, 167,826 - Pakistan, 7,801 - Sri Lanka, 6,203 - Bangladesh, 5,873 - Nepal, 3,787 - Afghanistan, and 200 - Maldives) visited Azerbaijan.

In January 2023, 119,094 tourists visited the country, which is 60.81 percent more than in the same month of 2022 (74,057).

Last year, 1.6 million tourists visited Azerbaijan, compared to 790,062 in 2021.
