Turkmenistan increasing cargo transportation to Afghanistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Jan. 23

By Huseyn Hasanov– Trend:

The Kerki (Atamyrat)-Yamamnazar (Turkmenistan) -Aqina (Afghanistan) railway is increasing its efficiency, Trend reports referring to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

Last year, trains consisting of a total of 7,405 railcars with various cargoes passed through this railway, which is 1,744 railcars more than in the previous year, according to the report.

Consumer goods are exported from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan, and mainly gasoline and diesel fuel from Turkmenistan.

Turkmen experts commissioned the railway from Turkmen Kerki city to Afghan Aqina town in 2016.

This section is a part of a transnational railway project on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) route. The new railway should eventually connect the Afghan section of Aqina–Andkhoy with the Atamyrat–Ymamnazar section in Turkmenistan and Panj city in Tajikistan.

By connecting Afghanistan with the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, this transit will provide an opportunity for the country to access Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and the European states through the sea, the Turkmen government said earlier.
