EIB supports Georgian road safety

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is allocating 5.75 million euro to finance road safety in Georgia, announced the Roads Department of Georgia, Trend reports referring to Georgia media.

As reported, the grant will be used to improve the quality and safety of Georgian transportation network.

Specifically, 150,000 euro will be used for environmental and social studies, while 600,000 euro will be spent on identifying dangerous sections on the east-west highway.

Meanwhile, 5 million euro will be utilized to have experts help the Roads Department implement projects of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The network aims to develop a Europe-wide network of railway lines, roads, maritime shipping routes, inland waterways, railroad terminals and airports.

As reported, this year, the Roads Department is going to implement five projects in total to develop the road infrastructure of Georgia. The projects include the identification of dangerous parts and construction of road signs for better safety of the roads.

These projects will be financed by the state budget, by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

In 2019, the department implemented projects worth 8 million lari ($2.8 million) to develop road safety.

However, projects worth 8.5 million lari ($2.9 million) are underway and will be finished in the first half of 2020.
