Increase in demand for used cars expected in Azerbaijan

An increase in price of cars is expected in Azerbaijan due to seasonal growth of demand for used cars in the domestic market, automobile expert Eldaniz Jafarov told Trend.

According to him, the growth in price of used cars in the secondary market in April is season-based. Like every year, in spring and summer months demand for cars in Azerbaijan is growing.

“In the middle of last month, according to a new decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, for 90 days this year, it will be allowed to drive cars with foreign numbers that have temporarily entered our country. After that, the car must leave the country or pass through custom clearance. I think this will also affect the prices, and price of cars will grow by about 5 percent from current prices,” the expert said.

“Old and unsuitable cars prevail in the used car market in Azerbaijan. Cars produced in the US and Europe are imported into our country through Georgia. An example of this in Azerbaijan can be the old diesel-powered cars that are banned for use in Europe, as well as problematic old hybrid cars brought from the US,” Jafarov noted.

The car expert also noted that sale-purchase of "problematic" cars in the domestic market is detrimental to citizens.

"Some dishonest dealers sell cars being unsuitable for normal use, as well as cars in accident condition, and the deceived buyer, in turn, cannot take any measures, because there is no structure that could provide information that the machine is unusable. Such information can’t be obtained even at the State Customs or the State Traffic Police. To obtain such official information or notification, there must be appropriate equipment that could fully diagnose the car. Unfortunately, the State Traffic Police, which conducts compulsory technical inspection of cars, doesn't have such equipment. It would be good if official or certified service departments provided diagnostics of the cars,” he said.

"Citizens who purchase a car in the secondary market should request such a certificate from the seller and, based on it, decide whether ir not to buy the car," the expert added.
